Gowalla for Mobile Web on Android Nov 6

Gowalla Mobile WebUp to this point we’ve tailored our core Gowalla experience to the iPhone, but we know that there are plenty of you out there using other location-aware smartphones who would like to go out with Gowalla. Today we’re excited to announce our first step in supporting platforms beyond iPhone with our mobile site at m.gowalla.com.

Gowalla for Mobile Web currently supports the location-aware browsers on Android and iPhone OS devices (even iPod touch if you’re on a wifi network). Our goal is to add support for other location-aware browsers in the next couple of weeks.

To be sure, we’re anxious to get native Gowalla clients out there for Android, Blackberry and Palm, but this is an important first step towards bridging our gap. In the future, you’ll also find us testing out new experimental features at m.gowalla.com before we add them to our native clients. So even if you’re on iPhone, it’s worth checking out.

We still consider this a beta release and no doubt you’ll find some bugs. We’d really appreciate your feedback. Additionally, as of today, you are not able to create new spots or swap items on the mobile web, but these features will be added in the days to come.

So go kick the tires, check in, and go out with Gowalla on Android!

Georgie Hammerton Nov 6 at 4:35pm

Blooming marvellous! You guys always have a trick or two up your sleeve(s)! Time to spread the good word to our Android brethren! :)

MattDing Nov 6 at 6:31pm

Awesome guys! Thanks so much. Looking forward to the ability to create spots on the webapp and to the Android app when it comes. I hate being left out of all this fun. ;)

Facebook User Nov 6 at 7:26pm

This wont work for me :(

Scalpel Nov 6 at 9:30pm

I tried it about 2 hours ago, and the mobile web page is not working on the Motorola Cliq. It seems to lock up and not load, and appears to be unusable currently.

Is anyone else able to use it successfully, or am I the only one having trouble? And when can we expect a full-on Android program for Gowalla?

Any possibility to have Gowalla for Symbian S60v5? There are alot of us on the Nokia 5800!

fatcontroller Nov 8 at 6:50am

any plans for a symbian version?

Sean MacDhai Nov 8 at 3:32pm

This is a great first step to supporting your passionate Android fans. Thanks! :)

Jason Nov 9 at 9:59am

@Scalpel I am having the same problems on the HTC Hero. Didn’t work at all last night.

Henry Balanon Nov 9 at 10:36am

Hey the iPod Touch has location services so why don’t you enable it in iTunes Connect for us so we can use the native app.

Facebook User Nov 9 at 10:41am

Not working for me either. Donut, Dolphin Browser, HTC Magic. Please fix.

Brian Nov 9 at 9:45pm

Fantastic! Excited to have a native Android app!

Stuart Mackenzie Nov 10 at 1:02pm

web browser version seems to work ok. Will be much happier when I can create spots though. keep up the good work!

Kim Nov 10 at 1:52pm

I also have tried using this on the Cliq and it will not allow me to sign in. Just locks up.

Kate Lathrop Nov 10 at 10:52pm

doesn’t want to work on itouch with 3.1.2 – says it won’t install because it’s not compatible with this itouch. also can’t get the mobile site on my Samsung Epix – just keeps telling me it’s ‘locating.’ but I still have the web based site.

Rene Flores Nov 12 at 9:59pm

Thanks! I’m looking forward to the Android app!!

Ryan Nov 14 at 4:45pm

On the hanging on startup, some user notes here:

Kyle Sheehan Nov 15 at 6:54pm

Any chance of WinMo being included in this? I know the market isn’t huge but there are some people who would love to use the service that use Windows Mobile.

Brian Nov 16 at 5:13pm

the mobile website seems to work great on my Palm Pre. Although the location doesn’t seem that accurate.

Facebook User Nov 17 at 8:35am

Works great on my Ipod touch via wireless (boingo hot spots). But does this mobile web page allow you to drop and pick up items?

Patrick Möller Nov 21 at 4:48am

I’m really looking forward for the Android App.

The Browser version is working on the G1, though it doesn’t call the passport-page after a successfull login. It appears to be hung up instead but when I click on any other menu item after the login the new page shows me a link for signing out, so I think the login was alright.

Facebook User Nov 25 at 5:40am

:( Cannot create spots on Webapp for Android.
Passport tab not loading.

Waiting for android native app!

keisha Reis Nov 25 at 8:50pm

I have a droid, and love it now I can keep up with my iphone friends but I can’t see the items.

Michael Capochiano Nov 29 at 9:44am

I can’t get it to work with a Droid. Just get a question mark icon on the page.

EdRadakovitz Dec 3 at 12:08am

When posting a new spot, it places it .5 to 1.5 miles away from the actual location. I am able to post new spots, they are just not in the correct place. My GPS is accurate on every other app on my Eris.

It also will not hold my current location. It states it’s at the correct location for a second or two them shows a location .5 to 1.5 miles away. SOmehting screwy with the mobile site or browser?
When are we gonna see a downloadable app for the Droid?

Samuel Yu Dec 3 at 1:34am

Unable to sign into the mobile site using my Palm Pre.

Harrison Miller Dec 4 at 8:21pm

i get a no location provider on the g1.

Tracey Adams Dec 4 at 10:59pm

Does it work on an LG Chocolate?

Thomas Dec 6 at 11:28am

About time because concentrating your mobile efforts on the iPhone is sooo 2008, really. As a matter of fact I got rid of my iPhone in favor of a Milestone and I know I’m not the only one. Couldn’t stand Apple’s iron grip any longer.

Looking forward to the native Android version then. And please don’t forget BB, Palm, and WM.

Facebook User Dec 7 at 2:02am

Please enable it to download on the iPod Touch. You say that it works on this device. I would really like to use this app.

11o576 Dec 7 at 6:41am

i’df like to use Gowalla on my Windows Mobile Phone. Please help me

cd Dec 8 at 9:25am

Jeez. This is a post about Gowalla on Android. Not the Pre or WinMo or anything else. Of course it’s not working on those devices yet. Their marketshare probably isn’t large enough to warrant development for them.

FiZ Dec 9 at 1:51pm

I tried logging into the mobile site and it kept saying Login Failed until I pointed my Droid’s browser to the regular site and logged in that way.

Christopher Frahm Dec 10 at 8:48am

the mobile version for android isn’t working for me on htc hero..

Kevin Dec 16 at 10:13am

Where is the Windows Mobile love? :(
There are many Windows Phone users who would love to have a version of Gowalla (native app or web site) for us!

klaus Dec 16 at 3:42pm

Not working on the HTC Dream either. Keep getting ‘no location provider.’

Simon Wildheart Bostock Dec 16 at 4:33pm

This web app works excellently, you need to use the native android browser with the gears functionality, which dolphin doesn’t seem to do, other than not being able to drop items it worked really well for creating spots and checking in, overall brilliant, just really looking forward to the proper app.

Nick Roshon Dec 17 at 11:06am

No app, no care. I wanted to try out Gowalla on my Droid but 4SQ is way ahead I guess, because apps > mobile browser. I hope you guys are working on one!

Mattias Dec 18 at 3:11am

can’t wait for the Symbian s60 version! There is going to be one soon?

daveingram Dec 20 at 6:08am

I get ‘no location provider’ on HTC Magic in Uk. Yes my gps is turned on :-(

Facebook User Dec 20 at 10:08am

Hi is facebook publishing anyone’s location while using this mobile site? I am “connected to facebook” on Gowalla and logging into m.gowalla.com – it is working but it is not publishing my location to facebook and I would like to turn that on. Is this feature included in m.gowalla?

JA Dec 20 at 11:09am

The mobile version does not allow me to login from my Pre. Am I the only one running into this problem?

srikanth jandhyala Dec 21 at 9:03am

have been using gowalla mobile site fr a while on android works great …although at times the location prediction is bit off…i wish i could also drop and pick items … those are two really good features missing

Brooke Dec 22 at 7:58pm

I’ve used Gowalla on the iPhone, Droid, and Hero. It’s great on the iPhone, not so good on the Droid and doesn’t work at all on the Hero.

Us Android users need a native app.

Would be awesome if this was also listed as an option under the Downloads link. Then I wouldn’t assume that iPhone app is the only option to use Gowalla.

Facebook User Dec 23 at 3:06pm

Boo. I’ll just wait for a native app for Android.

Peter Dec 25 at 11:52am

No mobile version of Gowalla for Palm Pre? I guess I’m ’stuck’ with the nice little elegant mobile web version of Foursquare. Love it!

Walter Whitehurst Dec 25 at 12:56pm

When is the android app going to be ready?

_bjorn Dec 28 at 3:25am

A solution for Symbian would be nice.

J.D. Patton Dec 28 at 10:38pm

Enjoying getting started with my ipod touch, but can not wait for the native blackberry app. (or at least the ability to access the mobile site via blackberry)

Facebook User Dec 29 at 1:43pm

Android App, quick please. Gowalla Mobile sucks.

sergio_101 Dec 30 at 12:12pm

just checking in to see if the passport page is workin on android now.. it’s just spinning on this end..

thanks!

jakaitch@gmail.com Jan 2 at 5:47am

when will their be a sybian version because that is a pretty big market?

Facebook User Jan 4 at 7:36pm

My first reaction is Palm before Windows Mobile…what’s up with that?
Sure, Palm had a much better than expected release of its Pre phone, but
the numbers still dwarf in comparison to the number of WM6 phones out
there.

I’ve joined Gowalla, but that’s pretty much all I can do. I can’t even
use the Mobile website, even though I can log into it with a Windows
Mobile browser. My Omnia’s gps plays nice with things like Google Maps,
so I don’t see what the problem might be.

I can’t wait to see Gowalla as an Android application. Because, seriously, I am ALWAYS forgetting to use it via the web-interface!

Please, Gowalla, if you can spare the resources, throw a couple people on Android Dev! You’ll make the lot of us who scorn the iPhone VERY HAPPY!

(disclaimer: personally, I love the iPhone as a sleek, hip piece of technology, but I’m always one to try and buck the trend and grab onto something a little more underdoggy.)

Simon Wildheart Bostock Jan 9 at 1:33pm

Seems you need to close down the mobile gowalla page on android, or it’ll keep running the gps, I have two windows running and switch to the view window view before closing the mobile app window.

Please hurry up with the native app.

Thomas Jan 10 at 6:12am

There is still no Android app available. But there is one for Foursquare now.

If the mobile site wouldn’t suck that much I’d probably use it. But entering my super complex password every so often because the feckin browser doesn’t store it (although I always tell it to) stinks. Period.

Tim Schmoyer Jan 10 at 12:30pm

I, too, am looking for a native app for my Droid. The mobile site apparently doesn’t let me pick up or drop items.

Josh Simmons Jan 11 at 3:50pm

Please, please, PLEASE! BlackBerry support :(

Paul Monaco Jan 13 at 10:23am

Why location based browsers for the mobile-web site? Simple phone users can manually enter locations and you can use a STANDARDS BASED mobile web scheme. Seems to work for Brightkite, Foursquare, et. al. Just sayin ;-)

Prattski Jan 13 at 2:48pm

Another + for the Android App. I’m on an htc Eris, and the location seems really unreliable at this point. I haven’t been able to check in to my current location all afternoon.

I’ve got a growing number of friends about to take the plunge onto an Android phone too, so it would be fun to start all using it together.

PLEASE PLEASE release a Windows Mobile app already! There are millions of productive type folk using Windows Phones out here. Having a native Gowalla app for WinMo would greatly increase your marketshare against foursquare and yelp!

Dennis Jan 19 at 2:34pm

When will this happen? Mobile app is terrible. I just need to know if I should go to foursqaure or stick around.

malcyl Jan 19 at 2:54pm

I was getting the ‘no location provider’ error on Android. I resolved this by switching back to the default browser from the Dolphin browser.

fred Jan 19 at 7:46pm

No, not great. No app for the android, what you figure a platform that will release on 25 handsets in the next year alone wont go anywhere? Using a browser based app with limited features makes it a second class use experience. Dudes, hire a high-school kid to port the iphone app to the droid. It’ll take a weekend, along with some dew and pizza. Open up some of the angel funds you just got and treat this like a business instead of some club you opened up for your cool friends.

Medisoft Jan 22 at 11:01am

I’m not able to get this work on my Blackberry Curve 8330.

richard Jan 23 at 2:09pm

Can the mobile version post your check ins to facebook? It doesnt seem too…

Alyson Curtis Jan 24 at 7:25pm

I lurve my google phone. Can’t wait for the full fledged android app, the mobile web is spotty at best… and when I say spotty, I mean in a bad way, not in a gowalla happy spot way.
