New Features: Trips and Bookmarks! Jan 28

Trips Tab Today we’re thrilled to announce the launch of two new features: Trips and Bookmarks. Let’s talk about Trips first.

Until today, all Trips in Gowalla have been curated by the team at Gowalla with a little help from select friends. But our goal has always been that you would help us create these trips. And today you can. Simply login to your Gowalla account on the web, visit a spot page, then click the Add to Trip button. You’ll be able to name your trip, give it a description, add up to 20 spots of your choosing, then publish it to Gowalla. Your published trips will be viewable in the Gowalla app by your friends.

Here’s where it gets fun: We’ll be looking for unique and exciting trips created by our community to feature in Gowalla. Featured trips will be promoted based on the quality and relevancy of the trip, the number of people who have completed the trip, and will be given their own custom pin artwork that will be rewarded to those who have completed the trip.

As of today, you can create as many as 5 trips, each including up to 20 spots. As we improve the feature we’ll allow you to create more trips, order their lists of spots, and categorize them into logical groups like Pub Crawls, Nature Hikes, and the like. Also, for now, you may only complete featured trips and trips created by your friends. This is just the first step in making trips a truly key part of Gowalla’s future. We have lots more to do.

Today you can view nearby, featured and friend-created trips in Gowalla 1.4 on your iPhone by tapping the Browse button in the upper-left of the Trips tab. Our forthcoming Android and WebOS clients currently in development will also support this feature.

I’d also like to tell you a bit about bookmarks as well. Now when you visit any spot page at Gowalla.com you can bookmark that spot. You’ll be able to find all your bookmarks in Gowalla for iPhone by tapping Browse on the Spots tab. This simple feature makes it easy to find your way back to a favorite spot. Soon you’ll be able to add bookmarks from your mobile device as well.

Today’s release of Trips and Bookmarks to our community is simply a first step. There is a lot of depth here to be explored. We’re excited to hear your feedback as we continue to improve these, and other, features. Thanks for going out with Gowalla!

Question- So I can only complete 5 (currently) featured trips? So, if I go to Austin, I can only comlplete 5 of the 6 featured trips there? But I kinda like the custom artwork! I needs it!

I was really really really excited about the trips until I saw that the only people who will be able to see trips I make are my friends.

I live in a remote area and very few people out here have Gowalla so I have few friends. BUT tons of people come here to vacation and of only my friends can see the trips I create they won’t know there are any trips available to do in the area.

I have ideas for trips I think tourists would love to do, dealing with the Twilight books/movies craze, art around the town, things like that.

In the future will everyone be able to see user-created trips without them having to be popular?

Theresa, in the future there will be ways for people to view and complete any trip in a region. That’s not quite built yet, but like we said, this is a first version release. More to come!

I was excited to see I could make custom trips and dove right in and made two and have 1 other in progress. (Got to go create a couple spots before it’s ready.) I should have read all the details first since I didn’t know I could only do 5 AND they’re not public. Oops.

If we can only do 5, how about the ability to delete some that nobody has done yet?

I hope Gowalla folks will take a look at some trips people have made and consider promoting them to be available to everyone. It’d be nice to have MANY more non-Austin trips available.

Any updates on how to “remove” a spot prior to posting your trip? (or even after?) The remove spot isn’t working (WARNING to new Trippers) …I guess I can create another trip in the interim, but I’d rather not.

I have updated to the newest version of Gowalla for the iPhone 3GS. The new interface is quite slick but I often find it much slower now. Also I have only received one item since the upgrade and I’ve checked in at over 100 new places. I am out of items to swap or vault. What’s up?

This is an awesome feature. The only problem is: How am I supposed to create a trip from my computer if I can’t get to any of the Spots I want to add??? The search feature under “Spots” on the website only pulls up spots that are *near* the place you query for. Then, to make matters worse, I only have 2 ways to see the results: sorted by popularity or sorted by newest. What about sorted by PROXIMITY?? Usually the spot I am looking for is neither new nor popular, and so I have absolutely no way of getting to it so that I can add it to my trip. Very frustrating!! Please help!

I have a concern with this Trips feature.

Just recently I discovered that only people that are my friends, and other way around, can see each other Trips.

So what about some special Trips for sight seeing and business?

I would like to create a Trip that will highlight all local tourist attractions but I do not see the point of doing that as no one except my friends will see that trip.

I hope you see my issue with this feature.
